Old Faithful

“You tend to be afraid when someone seems foreign to you. But if you aren’t careful, that can lead to bigotry.” -Jasmine Guy

The ironic tagline on this blog is “I have a vagina and I’m not afraid to use it.” Yet, apparently this chick, is terrified of things that her vagina might do.

Brit does an excellent job responding to that post. She also addressed her own squirting.

If you read through the comments on Brit’s post responding to the Toy With Me post, she responds to someone calling themselves “Mr Toy With Me.”

Mr. Toy With Me says:

You think that the intent of the article was to shame women? That she sat down and said…”hmmm, how can I go about shaming women with this post?”
I think your (sic) reaching.

And Brit responds:

“You guys have the right to publish whatever you want, and I have the right to disagree with any and all of it if I choose. We’ll have to agree to disagree, I suppose.”

I think Brit is being too nice.

The entire original article was unacceptable. The author called squirting a magic trick, she described it as freaky, and at the end asked if squirting turned you on and “Dear G-d why?”

When people use those same terms to describe gay sex, we call them bigots. It’s an opinion to think gays are freaks. It’s my opinion that people who think that gays are freaks are moronic bigots who should be punched in the face (that’s called hyperbole.)

Squirting is natural. My vagina isn’t “magic” (well, it is, but that’s a story for another day.) It doesn’t do tricks. Sometimes I gush buckets like Brit does and sometimes I don’t. I’m not unnatural.

I’m going to end my post on this subject like Brit did with hers. As dmf said, “i think it’s time to change slogan of this blog. because whilst you may have a vagina, you are clearly afraid to use it. because then what if it squirts! zomg!”

Book Club

“Frequently the more trifling the subject, the more animated and protracted the discussion.”-Franklin Pierce

I was super impressed that, despite my lack of organization, the first Book Club discussion seems to be going well. You can see my review of the first book, God Is Not Great, here. You can also read Brit’s and HDW’s. The original outline of the Book Club idea is here, but I’m going to change a few things.

The specifics:

First rule of Book Club is don’t talk about Book Club. Kidding. Please tell everyone.

The Book Club will be hosted on the last Friday of the month (I know this fucks up on months with five weeks, but I’ll figure it out later). For next month, this falls on Dec. 25 (Christmas).

The Book Club will be hosted by one blogger who will review the book.

The book will also be read by several other reviewers. Those reviewers will read the book and post a review and post a review on their blog. If they don’t blog (*gasp*), their review will be posted on the host’s blog.

Reviewers will disable comments on their review post and direct comments to the hosts blog. This time the book club generated a lot of interesting comments but they were scattered amongst the various blogs. I want to try to generate more discussion by keeping comments in one place.

We’ll pick the book by some semblance of democracy. If you have a book you’d like to read, suggest it in the comments or email me at neamhspleachas@gmail.com. I have two suggestions for the next time but I’m not married to them. E.J. Graff’s “What Is Marriage For?” and Richard Posner’s “A Failure Of Capitalism.”

I’ll both post here and send out an email to all interested parties on Monday, Nov. 30. For now, I’m just going to pick some reviewers. If you want to volunteer, let me know.

I’m not deeply attached to any of the rules and regs, if you have a suggestion, just let me know.

Book Club – God Is Not Great

“Just to stay within the letter “B,” I have actually had that experience in Belfast, Beirut, Bombay, Belgrade, Bethlehem, and Baghdad. In each case I can say absolutely, and can give my reasons, why I would feel immediately threatened if I thought that the group of men approaching me in the dusk were coming from a religious observance.” -Christopher Hitchens from “God Is Not Great” after being asked if he would, if approached by a group of men, feel more or less safe to learn they were coming from a prayer meeting.

I mentioned before I wanted to start a virtual book club. My original aim was to get the book review up by noon, link to the others reviews, and then discuss in the comments. However, when I originally set the date, I forgot it was the day after Thanksgiving. Of course, my life has been nuts, lots of people are traveling, and generally no one is around.

So I’m going to put up my review, link to the others as I get them, and just keep everything open for commenting for the weekend. We’ll see how this works out. If it sucks, so be it. I’m still drinking my parents wine all weekend.

Christopher Hitchens‘ “God Is Not Great” was selected because of the conversation on Twitter about the book between @HDW and @dmfarley. I had previously read the book, so I reread and took some notes for today. I’m not going to do a “review.” I want to participate in a discussion, not just have a bunch of people skim through me blabbering on about whether or not I like a book.

First, does Hitckens do a good enough job separating between religion and culture? He mentions the atrocities committed between religious groups in Serbia and Iraq. Would those atrocities be committed regardless of religion? Human beings certainly don’t need religious differences to hate one another, they are perfectly capable of doing that over ethnic, nationality, or gender differences.

Secondly, does Hitchens point about the absurdity of religion disprove God? Or merely religion?

Finally, is Hitchens too abrasive to reach people? To reach a wide audience?

Further readings on the subject (just a few I like):

Nothing: Something To Believe In by Nica Lalli
Why I Am Not A Christian by Bertrand Russell
The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins

What are your thoughts?

Edit: HDW’s post is up here.

Edit 2: Brit’s post is up here.

Crazy Elk

“I love things made out of animals. It’s just so funny to think of someone saying, ‘I need a letter opener. I guess I’ll have to kill a deer.” -David Sedaris

Just for fun:

Fruit Bat Blow Jobs

“Adapt or perish, now as ever, is nature’s inexorable imperative.” -H. G. Wells

Take that religious nut jobs! Oral sex can’t be bad, the bats are doing it!

From MSNBC:

“When they do their thing, female Chinese fruit bats add oral sex to get the males to prolong the act, scientists now find, suggesting the behavior confers evolutionary benefits.”
