A Twitter Conversion?

“Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

I was following the RTs (retweets, for you noobs) made by PZ Myers the other evening and found them amusing. A number of deeply religious people apparently follow him and comment on his remarks. I find this confusing.

I follow people on Twitter with whom I disagree. I occasionally read conservative, religious blogs written by people who I fundamentally disagree with and, frankly, dislike. Sometimes, while in the US, I would *GASP* even watch Fox News.

But I don’t engage. I never comment. I don’t reply. I see no point in interacting with people who are so entrenched in their wrongness.

That’s not to say I won’t participate in debates or that I shy away from confrontation. I enjoy discussion with intelligent, knowledgeable people. The people whose blogs and tweets I read on occasion aren’t, nor is anyone on Fox News.

I know I’m not going to change the mind of anyone who thinks homosexuality is a sin or abstinence-only education works. And since I don’t enjoy banging my head against a wall, I don’t try.

So why do the creationists and pro-lifers follow PZ? Or any other atheist, feminist, etc.? And more importantly, why do they engage? Do they think they’re going to change anyone’s mind? Is it just because Jesus wants them to?

Look, crazy people. I’m not going to start to believe in God, hate teh gayez, become pro-life, support Regeanomics, or have babies, so don’t waste your breath. Go feed some homeless people instead.
