“Unless their readers bring them back to life, books are indeed dead things.” -Lawrence Clark Powell
I mentioned in my update post that I want to start an e-book club. The plan so far is this: Announce what book we’ll be reading (I’m taking suggestions). Give everyone a month to read it. On the last Friday of the month, I’ll post my “review” of the book and either link to a few other bloggers who have reviewed or post reviews that other non-bloggers have written (aka my friend who I have browbeat into reading). In the comments on my post, we will discuss. It doesn’t have to be “live” per se (as in people need to be there at a certain time to discuss) but I anticipate there will be a time when the commenting is highest. The comments will, ideally, be focused on the points that the reviewers bring up, however the comments certainly won’t be limited to those topics.
HDW over at has been reading “God Is Not Great” by Christopher Hitchens. Heterdoxus at http://heterodoxus.blogspot.com/ also read it and really enjoyed it and those two have had some discussion via Twitter about that book. I read it a few months ago and really liked it as well, so I figure this is a good place to start.
I started a “Summer Reading List” over the summer. If I don’t get a lot of book suggestions, I’m going to work off of that. If people have books they want to suggest, I’m happy to oblige. My feeling is that I attract readers with a wide variety of interests, so the book topics will vary. People who are interested in one topic may not be interested in another, so the participation may rotate based on that.
If this becomes popular enough, on the new site, I’m going to add a “Book Widget” which will keep a running tally of all the upcoming books.
The first book will be discussed on Nov. 27, 2009. I will aim to get my review up at noon on Friday. I’m going ask the other writers to do the same.
