“Lo” -The First Message Sent On The Internet

I personally can’t remember a life before the Internet. I got my first AIM screen name in middle school. However, while I still thought boys had cooties, others were predicting the demise of the Internet.

In 1995, Astronomer Clifford Stoll wrote a piece for Newsweek called “The Internet? Bah!.” He predicts:

“The truth is no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works.”

Stoll learned his lesson. When recently interviewed about the piece he wrote, he notes,

“Now, whenever I think I know what’s happening, I temper my thoughts: Might be wrong, Cliff…”
