If you’ve been on the internet in the last few days, you know there’s a big controversy over Duck Dynasty. The head of the family, Phil Robertson, was interviewed by GQ and equated homosexuality to bestiality and terrorism and also claimed black people in the South weren’t oppressed by Jim Crow.
A&E, the channel which hosts the show, pulled Robertson from the air.
Unsurprisingly, Fox News lost its collective shit and accused A&E of censorship, violating the First Amendment and not respecting Robertson’s right to free speech.
Just a refresher, here’s the text of the First Amendment:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
You will note that doesn’t read “A&E shall make no law…” or “Private companies shall make no law…”
America is a country where you can say whatever you want without fear of government reprisal. It’s just not a country where you can say whatever you want without any reprisal. Robertson spoke. And now, so has A&E.
