I use Twitter a lot. It’s by far my favorite social networking platform and I am on it, well, constantly.
Thankfully, a few years ago, Twitter added in the mute feature (as well as other features, like muting certain words, etc.) So now whenever someone irritates me, rather than being forced to debate if I wanted to unfollow someone (which can be noticed), I mute them.
As muting is consequence-free, I tend to do it generously. Anyone who gets too RT happy tends to get muted or anyone who goes on long Twitter rants (…I may need to mute myself…) Exs, former coworkers, someone who is doing better in life than I am and who I feel jealous of all get muted.
So at the end of the year, I stage a Twitter jubilee. I unmute every single account. If there’s a person who I hesitate before unmuting, I unfollow. If they turn up on my timeline between now and the new year and I roll my eyes at them, I unfollow.
There were about 20 people on my list this year. Some I unfollowed immediately, most I just let them out of Twitter jail and back onto my timeline. It creates an entirely different Twitter experience almost immediately.
Unsurprisingly, some of the people who annoyed me during the first part of the year, immediately annoyed me again. Mostly I unfollowed. I few, though, I kept following for fear they would notice me unfollowing. Not sure how I feel about that…
